FORGING ON THE RIVER

The difficult decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Forging on the River Conference and the Auction. Due to unforeseen travel restrictions in response to COVID-19, it is impossible for our visiting artist, Heiner Zimmerman, to attend and instruct as planned.

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Forging on the River is a weekend conference with a pre-conference workshop hosted by the Metal Museum. In addition to the chance to learn from an internationally recognized Master Blacksmith, Forging on the River provides metalsmiths and enthusiasts the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and work collaboratively on projects, all while enjoying the Museum's exhibitions and grounds. The Metal Museum is honored to host Heiner Zimmerman as our 2020 Forging on the River guest demonstrator.

Register for the pre-conference workshop to work alongside Zimmermann, creating a collaborative team sculpture while learning new blacksmithing techniques. Or register for the general conference, which features blacksmithing demonstrations, a slide lecture, and opportunities to interact with Zimmermann along with other artists from across the country.

GUEST DEMONSTRATOR

Heiner Zimmermann is a second generation German blacksmith. His father, Paul Zimmermann, had his works published and thus influenced American and European blacksmiths throughout the 70's and 80's. It was through working with his father and uncle that Heiner had the unique opportunity to meet and work with leading smiths around the world including Hermann Gradinger of Germany, Olaf Punt of Norway, Alfred Habermann of the Czech Republic, Alan Evans of England, and Jeffrey Funk of the USA.

He completed his academic studies with a Master’s Degree in art and did additional studies in welding and restoration. His knowledge and skill led to a professorship at University Gothenburg Sweden which, like Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is one of only a few colleges in the world to offer advanced art degrees with a focus on blacksmithing.
